Hong Kong Electronics Fair & electronicAsia Conclude Survey: Electronics Industry Optimistic about Year Ahead
2014-10-28 17:33:10
During the fair period, an independent survey, commissioned by the HKTDC, found that about 90 per cent of buyers and exhibitors believe that the industry’s prospects for next year will be better than, or the same, as this year.
The survey interviewed more than 1,000 exhibitors and buyers about the outlook for the electronics industry. Most respondents said they were very optimistic about the markets of the Chinese mainland, by North America and Western Europe. “The survey results revealed industry players are optimistic about the prospects for the industry despite the challenges in the global economy,” said HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau. “A number of buyers said innovative and wearable electronics products were in particularly high demand, representing their primary purchasing product categories.”
Innovative Winners
Rommy Wu, Director, International Sales and Market Development of VTech Telecommunications, said global buyers are sensitive towards price, meaning that hi-tech and innovative functions were the key to increasing their orders. “Our digital baby monitor and office phone with conferencing capabilities are hi-tech products which receive good feedback from buyers,” he said.
Wendy Zeng, a buyer from Guangzhou, said she mainly sourced new sports headphones and wearable electronics products with health monitoring functions. “Our company engages in both exports and retail sales in the Chinese mainland market. With the increasing purchasing power of local consumers, they are looking for new and interesting products, as well as wearable electronics products with health monitoring functions,” Ms Zeng said.
World in 3D
As 3D printers become more affordable and printing technology and quality continue to improve, 3D printers attracted a constant string of enquiries from buyers. The inaugural 3D Printing zone at the Electronics Fair featured dozens of 3D printer suppliers and service providers, which presented good sourcing opportunities for buyers. Among them, Jeremy Cheng, General Manager of 3D Forge, noted that buyers from the United States, Europe and the Chinese mainland are particularly interested in 3D printers. He said that the “prosumer” was mainly concerned about pricing, while corporate buyers focused on printing materials, printable sizes, as well as printing resolution. Corporate buyers from the construction industry and product designers from different industries hoped to apply 3D printing technologies.
Brazilian buyer Isaac Candi, who works in the toy industry, said his company used to hire toy mould service providers. At the Electronics Fair, he explored the possibility of purchasing a 3D printer for the company to make their own moulds.
Besides 3D printers, JIE Technology showcased their Portable 3D Scanner, which performs Human 3D scans in just a few minutes. With the use of 3D printing technology, it is perfect for printing personalised products.
Traditional Market Optimism
Despite the weak economic environment in mature markets like the US and Europe, exhibitors and buyers were able to explore growing business opportunities. Hong Kong exhibitor Aqua Ventus, which featured waterproof outdoor speakers and headphones, received a positive response from buyers in Northern Europe and Australia in hi-tech products.
Brant Williams, President of US company Simple Living Technology, said shopping websites and television shopping channels were still in a high-speed growth phase and upward trend. His company sourced various electronic products ranging from kitchen appliances, to wearable electronics and sports electronic items. He said that the Electronics Fair offered better options when compared with fairs in other regions.
Ing. Martin Tichý, a representative of Eremg from the Czech Republic, visited electronicAsia to source electronic components, including diodes and circuit boards for resale to European electronics manufacturers. He was positive about the electronics industry in Europe and also appreciated exhibitors accepting small orders, making it easier to work with new suppliers.
High demand in Asia
Salina Wang, Head of Asia Pacific, Global Marketing & B2B, Oregon Scientific, an exhibitor in Hall of Fame, said that their wearable electronics and smart home products were very popular among buyers, particularly those from Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
One of the buying mission members, Witoon Suriyawanakual, Managing Director of Siam Global House, a leading retailer in Thailand, came to the Electronics Fair to expand the company’s electronic product line. Sourcing targets included kitchen appliances, home security products and smart home electronics. He was satisfied with the venue, travel arrangements and product selection of the Electronics Fair.
The two fairs attracted a total of around 95,000 buyers from over 150 countries and regions. Despite a slight drop in buyer attendance compared to last year, there were increases in the number of visitors coming from traditional markets including the United Kingdom and the Nordic region, as well as emerging markets such as Argentina, Mexico and Vietnam.
The HKTDC organises seven fairs in October and November. Among the largest events, the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (27-30 October), the Hong Kong Optical Fair (5-7 November) and Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair (6-8 November) will be held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
